A state-of-the-art educational facility designed to ignite a passion for learning and nurture creativity

Repton Senior School is situated upon a plot of 25,000 m² on Al Reem Island, in Abu Dhabi. The confined site presented challenges concerning the accommodation of the sports facilities, entry and exit points, and car parking spaces a school of this stature requires, however these challenges were overcome by driving the building design vertically, creating a large central atrium, which effectively becomes the heart of the development - conceptualised with aspirations of promoting a passion for learning and a sense of connectivity within the students.

The flow of traffic and the design strategy concerning three surrounding highways required close collaboration with the Department of Transport and Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge. BSBG was able to identify a solution that provided safety to pupils at the entry and exit points of the school, with appropriately planned drop-off and access points.

Linear perspectives and the use of colour for distinction

Aesthetically the central school building is uniquely designed with modern, linear elements and large faceted GRC panels. The interior design is focused towards providing a welcoming and collaborative environment for the school’s attendees. The central atrium within the main school building promotes visual connections through the use of colour in defining different learning areas, while the anchoring element of the cylindrical glass library, which is instantly visible, promotes an academic sensibility. Facilities include a six-lane, 25-metre indoor swimming pool, three indoor sports halls, rooftop tennis courts, and a multipurpose hall for creative arts. BSBG was the concept architect, interior designer, structural engineer and lead consultant, completing the full design packages, construction documentation, seeking authority approvals, and overseeing the tender process.
