BSBG delivers new community centre in Stockwell London

The Old Laundry in Stockwell, South London, has now opened for use by the local community after a redevelopment and refurbishment project involving Brewer Smith Brewer Group (BSBG) as Architect and Lead Consultant, Suna (Interior Design) and estate transformation specialists, Mount Anvil.

The Old Laundry was originally built as an industrial space to house boilers and laundry facilities for Stockwell residents. Prior to the refurbishment project, the building was used for community facilities and offices, however it had fallen into a state of disrepair over the ensuing decades.

Prior to commencing the work, asbestos removal from the basement was required. In addition, extensive structural works were completed on the first floor of the building to ensure it was fully supported and remained safe for the users of the building.

BSBG Associate Director, Alistair Bradley, worked on the project alongside Architectural Assistants, Sofia Sergiou and Raychelle Lemi. Alistair explained more about BSBG’s role: “The building required a complete overhaul and renovation to serve the community. We produced the drawings and developed the strategy with our client Mount Anvil. We then undertook the planning and initial drawings to define the zoning, also providing options for defining the spaces and the extent of demolition required within the development. The external features of the building have been retained, with the addition of new signage, windows and doors, as well as improving the public realm to create a central focal point for this housing estate. The project has been very well received by residents and community leaders, and we are delighted with the outcome.”

Sofia added: “The inside of the building has been completely transformed and is unrecognisable compared to the original condition we found upon our first visit. It’s been a fantastic experience for us to provide something which I think will be treasured by the local community and in particular the Young People Matter charity that will get so much use from the building.”

The Old Laundry was completed at the end of July 2023 and is now in use by the local community, as well as providing offices for Hyde.
