Brewer Smith Brewer Group (BSBG) Associate Alistair Bradley has relocated to the London studio, having been an integral component of the Dubai Headquarters for nine years. Alistair was instrumental in the successful delivery of a number of key projects for the group, including the IRENA Headquarters, Bluewaters Residences and The Residences Dorchester Collection Dubai, and as one of BSBG’s principal architects he brings to London an outstanding level of knowledge and expertise in delivering complex, high-end and large-scale projects. We spoke with Alistair about making the transition from Dubai to London…
Media Team: How are you settling into the London Studio?
AB: “It’s was a challenging experience to move countries during the Covid pandemic, and an unusual start to working in the London Studio, due to the home working mandate. New methods of working, however, have been well developed and BSBG’s remote working framework has been extremely effective with connectivity to all the required software. Needless to say, we are all looking forward to getting back into the office in May!”
Media Team: Can you explain the role you will be playing in the London Studio and how it differs from what you were doing over in Dubai?
AB: “Leading our London project delivery is an exciting prospect, and builds upon the portfolio of completed projects in Dubai. The process of managing design and coordinating architectural delivery is the same the world over, albeit in Dubai we are well-renowned for our fast-track programme capabilities and our reputation for providing the route to early enabling and superstructure works on site. But it is this focus on the end product and driving projects forward effectively that we are bringing to the London market, and we have already successfully delivered some very prestigious projects in the UK using this approach. My role is to continue to maintain and implement our international standards on all our UK projects, maximsing our use of technology, our BIM expertise and our project experience for the benefit of our clients.”
Media Team: Can you give us an update on any projects you’ve been working on over there?
AB: “After the successful delivery of both The Mayfair Townhouse and Nobu London Portman Square Hotel, we’re making significant progress on the Silk District Phase 2 residential project, located in Whitechapel. And we are currently in the commencement stages of some very exciting new projects, which must for now remain confidential. In addition, I am collaborating with my colleagues in the Dubai Headquarters on some of our international projects - in particular a very prestigious new development located in Riyadh. Our global reach and the way in which we are able to collaborate within BIM 360 is a real gamechanger for project delivery. It offers an opportunity for our global projects to benefit from an international pool of resources and technical expertise. This is one of the unique features of BSBG and other leading architects around the world: that we are a globally collaborative team. It’s that dynamic and flexible approach which has been responsible for some of our best projects.”
Media Team: Because of the pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns, has project activity in the UK, and London in particular, been negatively impacted?
AB: “There is a very large volume of work that is emerging and we are currently actively involved in some conceptual work with the +Studio BSBG design team. There are also a number of +Executive roles that we are expecting to take on shortly. We expect the London market to take off in the third quarter of this year now that lockdown is easing, and we hope life can start to get back to normal.”
Media Team: How have you and your family found it making the move back, particularly in light of the lockdown situation?
AB: “Moving countries is never easy, but we are delighted to be back in the UK after spending over nine years in Dubai. The family are adapting well, enjoying the season change from winter to spring, and moving on into summer. It’s a very different experience from the Middle East climate!”
