Brewer Smith Brewer Group (BSBG) recently announced Tom Skyring as the new Head of Interior Design. Renowned for his award-winning F&B and hospitality design, Tom comes with huge experience and a big reputation. The BSBG Media Team sat with Tom to find out more about his introduction to BSBG, his approach to design, and his hopes for the studio.
BMT: How would you describe your management style?
TS: “I get heavily involved in the layouts from day one, and I am fairly hands-on in that regard. Some of the programmes we face are very demanding and this requires the experience to deliver in these timeframes. We really have to hit the ground running. But at the same time as delivering under pressure, I want to nurture the team, to help them learn by sharing my experience.”
BMT: Is there a difference to the way in which you work at BSBG in comparison with other design studios?
TS: “It’s very unique in terms of a design studio, as all of our designs are ‘live’. We design in Revit, which means the teams are not drawing in CAD. It’s very fluid, very dynamic, and it means that design changes can happen far more quickly because information becomes instantly interchangeable. It’s all about making sure the design is creatively and technically sound, and ensuring the delivery retains the finesse of the design. That’s where BSBG has excelled in that past, and we aim to ensure that continues.
“The investment Alistair (McMillan, Managing Partner) is putting into building the studio and getting the right people in place is huge. They’re looking for personnel that have something extra in terms of quality. It’s a nice situation with the management team, as they allow us designers to focus on what we’re good at: design!
“Before I came into BSBG, I was aware of the design work they’re doing and it’s seriously impressive. You just have to consider the design of both JA Lake View Hotel or Banyan Tree Residences; these are award-winning ID projects. Now, we’re focused on building an even stronger interior design team, with great FF+E (which is a serious art by the way), and that layering will only help the quality of our work. The Senior Management team is allowing us to bring an edge to the work we’re producing, and we’re focused on getting the design right technically, as well as conceptually. Clients are coming to us more and more to ask about our interior design, and we have some very exciting works in the pipeline.”
