Senior Interior Architect Jamie Sandy presents on Sustainability at Think Global School

Brewer Smith Brewer Group (BSBG) Senior Interior Architect, Jamie Sandy, was invited to give a presentation on Sustainable Architecture to the students at Think Global School, as part of a study module dedicated to sustainable architecture and its positive impact on the world today. The purpose of the exercise module is to encourage each of the students to develop and construct their own 3D sustainable architectural model for display at an exclusive event, due to be held at the Dubai Expo 2020 in late-November.

Jamie began the session by providing an overview of BSBG as an architecture, interior design and engineering practice, highlighting key projects from the expansive portfolio of works. Throughout the workshop, the students learned about projects completed by BSBG that highlight sustainability and real world issues that architects and designers face within their field.

Climate change and taking responsibility for safeguarding the planet are by some distance the most important issues to modern youth, according to research conducted by the World Economic Forum, and Jamie was able to provide a case study of a current BSBG project upon which sustainability and green thinking are principal components of the concept and approach. The project integrates health through nature and holistic design as a sanctuary for the senses. Biophilic design and seamless architecture drive the experience, ultimately creating wellness and a sustainable built environment.

The students - whose ages range from 14 to 16 - posed a number of questions about some of the initiatives within the design Jamie had presented, before each having the chance to show her their own sustainable project designs as part of their Sustainable Architecture module.

“It was inspiring to see how advanced and driven these young kids are,” Jamie said. “They were inquisitive, and surprised me with how well informed they are. The understanding and knowledge the pupils have on sustainability within architecture was outstanding.”

On the students’ sustainable design projects, Jamie said: “They have researched in depth about sustainability and have applied these initiatives to their assignments. I saw knowledge of vertical farming, passive architecture (or as I prefer to call it, responsive architecture), energy conservation and water harvesting within their works. Another student incorporated smart farms and explored fertigation through the use of fishponds within the surrounding landscape. All of the projects are very diverse and address real world issues that we face daily. They are working hard to think of solutions that will benefit the future of design and sustaining our environment.”

Think Global School is an international travelling high school, where pupils live and study in a different country every semester. The global experience of visiting different international destinations and experiencing various cultures is combined with a first-class education. Students are encouraged to explore, research, and document the world around them, while living and learning with a diverse student body and faculty in a new country every term.

Once complete, the students will be displaying their work at the Dubai Expo 2020 on the 29^th November 2021. The event will be from 2pm to 4pm at the Dubai Cares Pavilion, which is located adjacent to the United Kingdom pavilion. Jamie finished by saying: “We are excited and look forward to seeing the students’ hard work showcased at the Dubai Expo on 29^th November.”
