Further verticality is achieved via a double height entrance, leading into a lobby space which, despite its modest size, portrays the illusion of space with the use of retracted adjacent areas, high ceilings, considered materiality and neutral colour schemes. Floor-to-ceiling glass at ground floor level has a lower degree of tint in comparison with the rest of the building, allowing for an abundance of natural light to illuminate the space during daylight hours, while at night the cubic form of the lobby illuminates out onto the street, giving The Edge a standout prominence amongst adjacent office buildings.
BSBG was able to successfully challenge planning controls linked to the district and demonstrate that the requirement for a traditional podium and set back tower did not serve to enhance the public realm of the vibrant, growing location. As a result of various presentations, the authority supported the wider public realm enhancement that the building would offer, if the above grade parking requirement could be adjusted.
The end result is the clean and elegant cube form of the building, presenting a point of urban contrast to the street, and creating open areas featuring activated spaces and outdoor seating.
