Brewer Smith Brewer Group (BSBG) has completed the final handover of The Mayfair Townhouse in London’s Green Park, with the hotel welcoming its first guests at the beginning of December.
A number of high profile guests and critics have been early to visit the unique bohemian-style hotel, with the reviews – many of which have been published in some of the UK’s most highly regarded publications - hugely positive.
Reviewers from Forbes, The Times and The Sunday Times, Tattler, The Telegraph and more all paid The Mayfair Townhouse a visit within the first two weeks of its opening, with Forbes remarking that “Almost all of the design language is decidedly British,” and that the hotel is “unlike anything else in London at the moment.”
One of the key challenges BSBG faced in delivering the refurbishment of the hotel, previously owned by Hilton, was the exceptionally intricate nature of the complete transformation required. The hotel is an existing structure which has, over the course of two centuries, expanded throughout differently configured existing properties. The hotel spans 15 interlinking 19th Century Georgian townhouses, seven of which are Grade II listed buildings, with 172 guest rooms running along almost the entirety of one side of Half Moon Street – a street once commonly frequented by Oscar Wilde. Half of the development’s Grade II listed status, the different layouts, floor levels and condition of each of the 15 buildings that make up the hotel, presented challenges unlike any others.
Coordinating the design, providing a fast-tracked full 3D model in Revit from which the entire project team could work from, and identifying opportunities for the client to reduce cost and risk by circumnavigating the requirement for a large proportion of planned demolition and excavation, are just a selection of the key contributions BSBG made during the early stages of project involvement. Since that time, BSBG has performed the role of Lead Consultant to manage the delivery of the design up until final handover, in what is one of the most complex projects within the group’s portfolio. The strenuous work and efforts of the teams involved in delivering The Mayfair Townhouse, as Partner Nick Turbott remarks, has really paid off. “The project has been very well received by the client, the guests and the media outlets who have managed to visit the hotel prior to the latest tier restrictions, and this is testament to the hard work of our teams in delivering this hotel successfully to London,” he said.
James Spitzer, Senior Architectural Technologist, was a key member of the team throughout the project for BSBG. “It was a project in which our technological understanding, and our unique capabilities in BIM and Revit were crucial. There are few projects out there as complex and demanding on a technical scale as The Mayfair Townhouse, and to see the hotel now finished, with the character and detailing of the public spaces, the guest rooms and suites, fills us all with immense pride at our involvement. Congratulations to all involved in the project for delivering such a standalone hospitality development in terms of quality, character and charm.”
The hotel promises to become a clandestine favourite to those in search of London’s quintessential and enigmatic offerings. As Mark C. O’Flaherty of The Telegraph wrote: “The Dandy Bar at the Townhouse is going to be one of my favourite places in the neighbourhood: its jewel-like interior of mirrors, leather and fin de siècle glitz is as comforting as the cocktails are delicious.”
