BSBG’s senior management were accompanied by staff that worked on Aloft City Centre Deira, attending the hotel’s signature W XYZ bar to mark the handover and opening of the project.
The highly anticipated hotel, designed by BSBG for client Majid Al Futtaim, opened at the beginning of the month, and for the staff that worked on the design of the project, this evening represented the first chance to pay a visit to the finished development to see the fruits of their design work.
The evening was attended by BSBG Managing Partner and Owner Alistair McMillan, along with Partners Andrew Bereza and Kevin Harper. Directors Scott Orwin and Nick Turbott were also present, as were Lead Architect Stewart Bell, Head of Design Armin Buchbinder, and his team of designers.
Armin Buchbinder was pleased by the finished hotel, commenting on some of the features within the building that serve to underline its unique position within Dubai’s Hospitality and Leisure sector. “I think Aloft is all about the views from the rooms as well as the amenity spaces including the pool and the bar. It is spectacular to see the entire downtown skyline. You lose the busy street and get a glimpse of the creek, overlooking the golf course. This unique potential is what we tried to maximise with the full height glazing towards the creek side, but we also significantly reduced glare with the shading of the pronounced recesses in the façades.”
A unitised, modular façade design featuring floor-to-ceiling glass serves to give Aloft City Centre Deira a distinctive appearance that can be seen from miles around. The concept design intent called for the façade to adopt an anodised metallic bronze appearance. After an in-depth study that incorporated a number of different materials, tests were carried out to ascertain the reflective qualities of each in sunlight – as the Creekside façade would ultimately be sun-facing for the majority of the daylight hours. Specifically, samples that featured a brushed surface reflected most sunlight, which was the required response. In addition, the bronze colour serves to reinforce the Majid Al Futtaim brand and is complementary to the attached Deira City Centre Mall.
Piers van Zandvliet, Senior Design Architect, was also similarly impressed by the panoramic landscapes at sunset, telling us: “The views from the hotel pool bar and W XYZ across Dubai Creek, the golf course and villas, with the Downtown skyline in the distance are exceptional and unique in the very urban context of Deira.”
