Working simply, simply working

Future proofing BSBG

How do we use technology to enable our employees to be more productive, more effective and more efficient, whilst also improving data security, resilience and dynamism? This is probably one of the most commonly asked set of questions in technology meetings around the world since the dawn of the processor.

The road ahead

BSBG has begun its journey to the cloud and is currently operating a hybrid cloud strategy. By securing our core services such as email, software management and collaboration tools in the cloud, we have created a secure infrastructure that allows us to work effectively and efficiently from anywhere at any time without the need for complex user training.

We are now looking to replicate our data across several global data centres, ensuring that we can operate from anywhere in the world with maximum speed and efficiency, and we can be assured that ours and our client’s data is safe. We have the capability take on projects in the far corners of the planet and it would be no different to starting a project down the street.

At this point, I could cite stats and facts on the usage of cloud technologies such as 93% of organisations surveyed by Forbes are running cloud applications or software as a service (SaaS) just like BSBG; or that 82% of organisations have a hybrid cloud strategy (Kepes, 2015), just like BSBG; or that by implementing a cloud strategy we can avoid unnecessary cyclical expenditure and risk associated with hardware life cycles and support.

But what’s important to BSBG is far less tangible than total cost of ownership figures, and far less convoluted than return on investment models. In fact it’s much simpler than that.

We are investing in solutions that will enable our employees to simply work and to work simply. Solutions that aim to minimise the stresses of dysfunctional technology and allow our teams to concentrate on doing what they’re good at, wherever and whenever that may be, with minimal disruption.

The challenges

One of the major challenges in introducing such a significant strategy change to an organisation is the approach to change management across several very different core competencies. At BSBG, these include Architecture, Interior Design, Structures and Project Management, and they all have different requirements and working habits that need to be considered.

We are fortunate enough to be inundated with incredibly intelligent individuals that are susceptible and open to change and a leadership team that isn’t afraid to support innovative ways to improve the BSBG experience; and that’s what makes the changes so achievable and the vision a reality.

Going green

We are also currently investigating further innovative ways to incorporate market leadership and sustainable practices, such as paperless project management and paperless design, that together will reduce the environmental footprint of building design and raise the standards of the markets we operate in.

What’s clear is that the future will bring some incredible technologies with it, some ideas will rock the world, and others will falter and fade away. With that in mind, perhaps the biggest challenge for technology professionals lies in identifying which innovations align with the business and the market, and which innovations simply don’t. BSBG has made the decision to operate a sustainable technology strategy, and will endeavour to ensure all future innovations support this ideology.
