Brewer Smith Brewer Group (BSBG) has been shortlisted in the Digital Excellence category at the prestigious 2022 Building Awards. The BSBG entry demonstrates the use of advanced 4D sequence detailing, implemented on the Silk District Phase 2 project in Whitechapel, London.

As an international architectural firm dedicated to deriving maximum value and efficiency in projects through the adoption of new technology and innovation-led methodology, BSBG’s continued success in delivering large-scale, complex projects is firmly entrenched in extracting the most from BIM software, and is underpinned by strategic BIM planning.

A recent focus for BSBG has become the art of 4D sequencing; effectively presenting and breaking down the inner layers that form building components, structures and finishes, and explicitly demonstrating the way in which these elements fit together.

The level of detail within these visualisations, rendered in GIF format, provide not only a blueprint for the process of construction; they allow a true understanding among all project stakeholders – from clients to contractors – that the proposed design works, and that it is definitively buildable.

BSBG Associate Mark Vaughan is the Project Lead for Silk District Phase 2. He explained more about the initiative: “We’ve brought levels of detail to the project that would not ordinarily be achievable in common two-dimensional designs,” he said. “This method of modelling involves creating families of the specified products, constructing the detail as expected on site based on the 2D intent, before utilising displacement sets to extract the 4D sequence. As a further step, we collated these views into an animation which allows the client to communicate to the contractors on site the detail sequence required, using a mobile application.”

BSBG Associate Director Alistair Bradley added: “The 4D sequencing initiative was activated on a key residential development for us, which provided an opportunity to implement this exciting new level of detail on an active project. The feedback we have received from the client Mount Anvil has been fantastic, and as a consequence we are now providing our standard of technical delivery on a series of exciting Mount Anvil projects across London. We’re delighted to have been shortlisted in the Digital Excellence category at the 2022 Building Awards, and to achieve this recognition is testament to both our commitment to extract the maximum from BIM and its associated software, and also to the capabilities of our outstanding Technical Team.”

The Digital Excellence category recognises firms that have taken advantage of digital technology to pioneer innovative new ways of delivering construction projects more efficiently, predictably, and of better quality.

This year’s awards ceremony is set to take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 1^st November 2022.
