5 architectural trends for 2017

Words by BSBG Media Team, Wednesday 28 December 2016

With 2017 upon us, we take a look at the five architectural trends likely to emerge or continue to evolve during 2017. This year brought sustainability to the fore in the UAE, in addition to functionality and cost efficiency – reflective of the practical and logical approach that now seems to have been adopted in the most part.

In 2017, technology will continue to revolutionise the global architecture industry, however when it comes to practice rather than theory, a return to a more classic modern authenticity in design and materials is likely to be a distinguishable feature of the year ahead…

1. The BIM revolution

Since 2012 BSBG has remained steadfast in its commitment to embracing Building Information Modelling (BIM), helping developers and contractors to understand and fully utilise the benefits. Now, the majority of those in the architecture, engineering and construction sectors have a solid understanding of the necessity for committed BIM adoption. This rate of adoption will continue to increase as the year progresses, as will the number of ways in which the digital process can be utilised. More tools and technology will be introduced into the world of BIM, most likely incorporating elements of generative design, the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data and virtual reality too.

As technology continues to integrate with the construction industry through BIM, developers, owners and operators will benefit from additional savings in terms of cost and time, particularly if architectural practices take the lead in efficient integration of the wealth of technological solutions that could feasibly extend the benefits of BIM to levels far beyond what we see now – more intelligent designs, increased building functionality and efficiency. This is something BSBG is committed to for 2017.

2. A more simplistic interior approach

For interior, the desire for a less structured, more authentic approach has already started to become apparent. This will become more predominant, as the 2017 end user has a preference for a surrounding environment offering respite and a detachment from the technology-driven lifestyle with which we are now so accustomed. Given the fast-paced turbulence of 2016, a sense of comfort, stability and simplicity is what the majority look for in their homes, workplaces, restaurants, cafes and hotels. This is a call that is being answered by designers the world over already – a return to the original sensibilities that give a space a truly original identity and an authentic sense of ‘place’.

3. A renewed focus on infrastructure and masterplanning

Infrastructure retains a focus in 2017 across the world, as many major cities look to expand, while simultaneously ensuring the happiness of residents – paying great attention to the global sustainability rankings which have become an area of huge significance during the past year. In fact, never has there been a more concentrated spotlight targeted at resident happiness and city sustainability initiatives; particularly in Dubai, the home of BSBG, where in 2016 a Minister for Happiness was introduced, and where huge infrastructure projects are currently either in the construction or planning stages – with a huge metro expansion, the route to Bluewaters Island, and the Expo site just three of the massive projects currently underway.

There is a need and desire to ease congestion and minimise disruption in growing cities such as Dubai, driven by the importance it places on its residents’ happiness levels, as well as its global rankings in happiness and sustainability, which are scrutinised the world over.

4. Increased investment in training and recruitment

Keeping up with the constantly evolving architectural landscape, in terms of technological advancement, is a challenge for everyone – from professionals at the top of the industry to new graduates and students. As such, more investment will be made by the leading architects in training and developing best practices to ensure staff are able to fully exploit and make best use of the technology at their disposal.

Architecture firms will also place more emphasis on recruiting the right candidates – those that match the values, design preferences and ambition of the company. More qualified architects than ever before are searching for job opportunities, and the increase in candidates means an increase in resources is necessary to determine those that fit best.

5. Sustainability

The world is now moving towards sustainable practices in all walks of life. From energy to transportation, a green approach has been well and truly endorsed – by the majority. Developers are certainly now encouraged to place great emphasis on sustainable methods when it comes to the construction of buildings, and features in the design and finished product. BSBG has played a major part in the UAE’s leading sustainable initiative, Masdar City. Working alongside Brookfield Multiplex and Masdar, BSBG has played a leading role in delivering Masdar HQ, the UAE’s first four pearl rated building, and it continues to work to deliver an ongoing new development in Masdar City - Masdar N1R.

With an increased interest in sustainable materials sourced locally, as well the introduction of 3D printed buildings, much like the one seen in Dubai recently with the world’s first 3D printed office, costs and impact on the environment will quite possibly be at the lowest levels in recent memory, particularly in the UAE where the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 aims to make Dubai a global centre of clean energy with a green economy.
