BSBG attends BIM Summit as CIAT delegate and representative

BSBG’s Senior Architectural Technologist Mark Vaughan and Lead Architect Alistair Bradley attended the third European BIM Summit held in Barcelona; Mark as a key speaker/member of the delegation of representatives from the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), who sponsored the event for 2017, and Alistair as one of BSBG’s BIM leaders.

Mark, who at the time was also managing and overseeing the establishment of BSBG’s Vietnam office, travelled to attend the summit and gave a well-received presentation on the implementation of BIM in the Middle East and Asia, using case studies from a number of BSBG projects to emphasise the use and challenges of BIM within the region, and how Architectural Technologists are well placed with their experience/qualifications to support/manage the process.

BSBG has led the transition of regional projects into a 100% BIM workflow, setting a new standard in terms of quality and delivery and raising awareness of the integral role architectural technology has to play in modern architectural development throughout the Middle East and Asia.

BIM Summit presentation

During his presentation, Mark explained the diverse nature of BIM and explained that in order to remain at the forefront of the regional market, BSBG continually reviews its processes to ensure optimal performance and a higher standard of solutions and services for its clients. He also offered an insight into the role the Architectural Technologist plays in BIM; a role that includes educating, devising strategies and planning timescale. BIM has completely changed the way in which project programmes are managed by BSBG, and Mark presented an effort curve (included below) to highlight the shift in working practice as a result of BIM implementation from the pre-design stage through to construction.

BSBG’s involvement in the European BIM Summit serves to reinforce not only its commitment to BIM, but also its long standing relationship with CIAT. The practice currently employs six Chartered Architectural Technologists, including Mark, Richard Griffiths, Alan McIntyre, Chris Day, AJ Hutchinson and Chris Brown (Associate and Technical Manager), who is largely responsible for having introduced and raised awareness of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) in the Middle East. He is also a CIAT assessor for members and offers guidance and assessment of those hoping to gain a Chartership (MCIAT) themselves.

As a result of Mark’s involvement in the European BIM Summit, BSBG was privileged to receive a large feature piece in the quarterly magazine, AT Journal, which is sent out to the global membership of CIAT. In the feature, a number of Mark’s blogs on BIM were reproduced in print format, offering insight on the BSBG approach to BIM for the benefit of readers across the world. In addition, the magazine has just been published online, and you can read that here.
