Watch: The Beach | Retrospective

Words by BSBG Media Team, Sunday 18 October 2020

The Beach is an urban retail and entertainment destination completed in 2014. Brewer Smith Brewer Group (BSBG) took on multiple roles in successfully delivering The Beach on an 18-month fast-track construction programme. The group performed the roles of Executive Architect and Interior Design, Lead Consultancy, Structural Engineering and Construction Supervision, with BSBG Partner Andrew Bereza the Project Director.

The project was designed by concept architects Benoy, led by Michael Lewis, who was at that time the firm’s Design Director. During the design stages, Michael worked closely alongside BSBG on delivering the unique vision for The Beach; the masterplan presents almost 70 retail/F&B units, each with an individually designed elevation, materiality and context within the development. Eight years later, Michael Lewis now leads BSBG’s own design hub, +studio to deliver concepts within the group, combining the creative flair so prominent within The Beach design, with the technical excellence and understanding that successfully delivered his vision.

In The Beach | Retrospective, we hear the story of how The Beach was conceptualised and delivered directly from those that were involved. Michael Lewis and Andrew Bereza provide some background to The Beach and the early involvement of BSBG, also highlighting the technical challenges and discussing the legacy of a project that remains to this day one of the most significant and enduringly popular developments ever to have been delivered in Dubai.
